Dinner-Date Etiquette

Ladies:

1. Do you order the moderately-priced or most expensive item on the menu?

Don’t ever order the most expensive thing on the menu. Guys don’t like to think they’re being taken advantage of.

2. Do you have a cocktail or glass of wine or do you let loose with multiple drinks and really enjoy your date?

Enjoy a few libations, but pace yourself. A mildly tipsy woman is fun; a roaring drunk is one car ride away from being dropped off on her front lawn.

3. Do you bother with dessert?

Definitely order dessert – and sharing is a great idea. It will provide an opportunity for more talk and more intimacy.

4. Is it alright to ask to sample your date’s dinner?

Yes, but just let him parcel out the portion. No guy likes to watch his steak disappear before his eyes while he can do nothing about your invading fork.

5. Do you pick up the tab?

No. Even if you asked him out, give him a chance to pick up the tab – it will make him feel great about taking care of his date. If he doesn’t at least offer to pay – you know you’ve got a cheap one.

Men:

1. When choosing a restaurant do you go with your local favorite or do you research a date-friendly restaurant?

When choosing a restaurant, consider it carefully. The local pub with a loud tv screen within hockey-viewing range might not be ideal for quiet conversation and making an impression.

2. Do you risk looking old-fashioned and offer to pick your date up for dinner?

Always pick a date up for dinner. Meeting at the restaurant simply reads as half-hearted.

3. Should you suggest a dinner-sharing experience like tapas, sushi or a platter for two?

Absolutely. It will add variety and fun to the dining experience and will offer an extra opportunity for closeness.

4. Should you suggest a decadent dessert?

Definitely. Most women would secretly prefer to sample the chocolate mousse torte than to spoon away at the sorbet. Lift the burden and enjoy the chocolate treat with her.

5. Do you pay the bill?

Yes. Even if she does the faux wallet-reach, be a gent and send the message that
you think she’s worth getting to know.
